Recent Events
Members of the Smithson Society community have recently enjoyed these special opportunities:
February 2008 – Butterfly Pavilion
Less than a week after its opening, members had the special
opportunity of an after-hours visit to the new exhibition Butterflies +
Plants: Partners in Evolution at the National Museum of Natural
History. Though it was snowing outside, it was balmy in the specially
designed pavilion, home to dozens of butterflies.
January 2008 – America by Air
Smithsonian Contributing Members at the Sponsor level and above
joined Smithson Society members to view the new permanent
exhibition America by Air at the National Air and Space Museum.
Guests explored the exhibition, which details the history of commercial
air transportation.
Summer 2007 – Food for Thought Luncheon Series
Smithson Society members were given an insider’s look at the
curatorial and scientific work of the Smithsonian during this year’s
luncheon series. In June, members received a preview of the National
Museum of Natural History’s new Ocean Hall, scheduled to open in fall
2008. Society members traveled around the world from their seats in
the Smithsonian Castle while learning about the Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institution’s Center for Tropical Forest Science in August.
The luncheon series ended in September with a trip to the National Air
and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where members toured the collections after learning about the future plans for the
center.
April 2007 – Smithson Society Annual Members’ Weekend
Members of the James Smithson Society, the Smithsonian National
Board, senior Smithsonian staff, and special artist guests came
together for a delightful, informative, and exciting weekend of special
tours at the Smithsonian Greenhouses, the Anacostia Community
Museum, and an array of other destinations. The capstone to the
weekend was an elegant black-tie dinner in the newly-opened Donald
W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, home to the
Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
